Fall Veggies

Okay, so now that summer is over, we should be seeing our fall vegetables growing: the lettuce, beets, carrots, and cole crops we planted in July and August. Anyone have others besides these? :?:

Re: Plague weeds...

The worst weeds ever are lawn grasses. Given that there are laws and regulations against planting certain invasive plants, I think lawn grasses should be added to that list.

Re: Successes and failures

Corn was a bust. But the pole beans are just now coming into their prime, after most everything else is finished. Got reasonable harvest of summer straighneck squash; satisfactory. Onions were all pulled in early summer, still have most of them frozen. Carrots mediocre -- they have stunted roots, bu...

Re: Amorphophallus in bloom

Well, since you have an amorph, are you a member of the International Aroid Society? www.aroid.org They also have a listserv, Aroid-L, where you can discuss anything aroid related; there are quite a few amorph fans there.

Re: Successes and failures

So I've had a few more of both. Got my first cucumber a few days ago -- which is odd, since I didn't plant any cucumbers. Must have been a leftover seed from last year. Also got my first straightneck squash. Turnip greens produced strongly -- I couldn't keep up, so I froze a lot -- and now seem to b...

Successes and failures

So here we are in May. Which means that, down here on the Coastal Plain, we've been gardening for about a month and a half. Long enough to have seen both successes and failures. Successes: I have already gotten two cuttings of turnip greens (I planted "Seven Top," a variety that only makes...

Am I the only one?

Am I the only one interested in organic :?: I would think there would be more posts in this section by now. I realize the garden chemical industry is still strong -- I see all the bottles of liquid whenever I go to any garden shop -- but honestly, I've never actually needed them. The only time I've ...

I know what you did last summer

Last summer I had a seasonal job in Ohio. The house where I was stayed (provided by my employer) had a once-beautifully landscaped garden, which had since been neglected. After clearing it with my boss, I rose to the challenge of restoring it to beauty again. Fisrt of all, I had to tackle the...

Finally get to garden! Yay!!

I still live in an apartment on the second floor, but thanks to my social network (read: vegetarian group), I found out about a community garden where people can rent plots. :) It is on a floodplain which was underwater during Hurricane Floyd a few years ago, so the city will not let homes be built ...

Yes. But my only outdoor space is the common balcony I share with everyone else on my floor, which is also where anyone can come up to the doors. That's how my multiflora rose got stolen (yep, I'm in the Bible Belt). My tomatoes were okay there, though. I brought them in before first frost, but now ...

I used to grow them, but since I live in an apartment now, I am limited to container gardening. When I had access to a garden, I started my own nettle patch (nettle is the best early-spring vegetable). In the same place, I could easily get wild huckleberries and blackberries, and with a bit of searc...

iTunes set to random. "Ahi Wela" by Braddah Iz just finished, and "Naked in the Rain" by Blue Pearl started.

Well, I never did get to try those; but when I moved, I brought the rose with me, and the mites cleared up. Don't know whether it was the ride in the car (intense greenhouse effect) or the change of climate. The rose was coming back healthy. But then in October someone stole it. I was so sad -- I wa...

biofuels

Maybe that's because people have tunnel vision... as in, they think biodiesel has to be made from corn. With a bit of reworking the processing, cow manure or even various other, nonfood plants could be used.
