Re: Plagues of Asian Lady Beetles

Hmm...I don't think we have them here. It sounds almost as much fun as the time an entire carpenter ant's nest decided to hold its nuptial flight in my living room.

I Will Never Again...

I was inspired by a similar thread on a culinary site to post this topic, because I can be just as much of a doofus in the garden as I can in the kitchen... 1) I will never, ever again bring several loads of soil from one area to fill some raised areas in another, and forget to consider that the sou...

Re: Fall Veggies

The trouble with those is that I never have room for them! My squash run completely amok and dominate the garden until harvest time. I did plant chard in the spring and it sort of clung on beneath the squash leaves. Now that they're gone, it's coming along nicely and I'll be able to harvest it on an...

Re: Plague weeds...

I have several...the worst is lesser bindweed. Need I say more? Then there is the grass with thick brittle deep-reaching runners. And there is an arum which seeds itself everywhere....yes purslane is there too but I always manage to use it and love it with yogurt. :) Wild green amaranth is an amazin...

Japanese winter squash "Futsu" and other things

I'll soon have lots of seed available of a very nice, prolific and delicious little Japanese winter squash, "Futsu." (C. moschata) The fruits are deeply warted and almost black with a dusty bloom; over time they go pale orange. The taste is often described as being like hazelnut. I wouldn'...

Re: Successes and failures

My corn was a bust too! I think the problem was that I didn't plant enough and didn't get good pollination. It was definitely knee-high by 4th of July! I kept it watered and the soil is not bad, but the ears that it did produce were really scrawny, only one of them had ny decent amount of kernels. S...

Re: Amorphophallus in bloom

Hi - No I'm not a member of any specialty groups these days. I used to belong to a few, when I'd get really obsessed with a particular group - hoyas, carnivorous plants, cacti and succlents. My gardening tastes are all over the place now. Is there an International Noxious Weed society? :)

Re: Hello from Western Canada

Brugmansia wars? I've obviously been missing out! I guess following heirloom vegetables and squash/pumpkins is just a little too tame... I agree with the Davesgarden problems; maybe it's something that comes with ginormity. Welcome growin, from a former neighbor (I lived in Seattle for about 13 year...

Re: What's blooming now?

Right now I have Salvia gregii (a hot pink one), "Heavenly Blue" morning glories, Cosmos sulphurea is blooming up a storm, one of the giant white Daturas, Tithonia, a big pink Brugmannsia and Dolichos lablab. I figure pineapple sage will be along in a few weeks. I've harvested all my winte...

Re: Daylily Seedlings 2009

Splooge! :) Those are beautiful! I can sympathize with you on the weeding, especially since I have a garden full of lesser bindweed, amaranth (easy to pull but so many seeds...and it's also a delicious green so I'm always tempted to leave some) and some sort of grass with thick, white roots that jus...

Re: Hello from Western Canada

Welcome from me as well! I've been a bit preoccupied lately and haven't been on in a while... Surprised at all these people getting warned/banned from GardenWeb! For what exactly? Jayden - you should have sent the lady a "for addressed recipient only" box and added some Australian stinging...
