Amorphophallus in bloom

Postby kipouros on Tue May 26, 2009 12:42 pm

Hi all! I've been tracking the progress of the Amophophallus rivieri that I brought last year from Seattle. It showed a bud about a month ago and just started opening today, with a height of 110 cm from soil surface to the tip of the spadix. Actually a small one relatively, but it will get lots of fertilizer this summer and hopefully put on some bulk for a bigger bloom next year. The smell is interesting as it blends with the honeysuckle and Nicotianas...sort of like waltzing with the grande dame at the ball of the Living Dead I suppose. It's fun to watch the confused flies. :) Pictures of its progress are on my blog (address in the sig below).

Hey there, kipouros!

Enjoyed your description of the fragrance.

The link to your blog just took me to a general page, am I doing this right?

The 'other' guy on this lonely site...

Well, since you have an amorph, are you a member of the International Aroid Society? www.aroid.org They also have a listserv, Aroid-L, where you can discuss anything aroid related; there are quite a few amorph fans there.

Hi - No I'm not a member of any specialty groups these days. I used to belong to a few, when I'd get really obsessed with a particular group - hoyas, carnivorous plants, cacti and succlents. My gardening tastes are all over the place now. Is there an International Noxious Weed society? :)
